Development and construction
Technical solutions and caring for the environment
The Monegasque Challenge

Construction in Monaco – because of the narrowness and geography of the land – is almost always a headache, and requires real ingenuity to overcome. As Patrice PASTOR, the delegate Chairman of J.B. PASTOR & FILS puts it, “The greatest difficulty in Monaco is to optimise ground space” (…). For the construction of the Quai Kennedy, where the building occupies almost all the land, we were faced with an obvious lack of space as well as the constraints of road traffic, using new techniques to minimise disturbance: it was our expertise and the means we deployed that allowed us to complete this exceptional building.”

Adapting to any circumstances

The unique nature of the Monegasque territory requires perfect mastery of the construction of infrastructures in a confined area. “J.B. PASTOR excels in the quest for optimising the use of land where constructability is nothing short of a challenge; the TESTIMONIO operation, carried out on behalf of the principality’s government, is a perfect example: a narrow plot of land led us to build a sheer wall 47 metres high. The Quai Kennedy programme is also quite amazing.”

The PASTOR GROUP
And great names in architecture

The PASTOR GROUP calls upon renowned architects working hand in hand with skilled Monegasque architects. Among the most famous names are Gio Ponti, Ricardo Bofill, Jean Nouvel, Rem Koolhaas, Jean-Pierre Lott, Christian de Portzamparc and Franck Gehry.

Green projects

Needless to say, caring for the environment requires taking several kinds of measures, including the quest for the quietest equipment possible. Patrice PASTOR tells us, “The construction of the new Monaco Yacht Club was one of our ‘test’ worksites: the excavation was done using special tools avoiding the use of pneumatic drills. It was quite a conclusive première. As well as this, we enforced a whole series of measures, such as training our foremen in “green developments”, adapting our worksite management, in particular by proper disposal of waste using specific techniques. We also increased our contractors’ and labourers’ awareness of the purpose of this approach, not forgetting staff safety, since the well-being and work quality of our employees is considered to be part of our environmental considerations and very important to us (…). Moreover, the optimisation of noise or reducing electricity consumption are decisive elements that are easy to implement – heating using solar panels, installing meters to check consumption, etc. We have adopted all these measures, including household waste management, of course.”
As a general rule, PASTOR GROUP constructions are in keeping with technical innovations in the protection and respect of the environment.

Traditional craftsmen

J.B. PASTOR & FILS employs 500 permanent staff, including most building trades. This includes reinforced concrete, hard coatings, electricity, and paintwork. “The complexity nowadays, when individuals undertake interior decoration work, for example, is often coordinating the contractors and tradesmen and we are in a position to offer our clients made-to-measure solutions, adds Patrice PASTOR.
J.B. PASTOR & FILS acknowledge the unequalled value of certain traditional “trades, such as traditional wood carpentry” and gold leaf painting, which have not changed, substantially over time and are passed down from master to apprentice. The same applies to decorative plasterwork – a highly local activity, characteristic of the Belle Epoque style – J.B. PASTOR & FILS has created a factory to store the moulds for decorative elements that are a priceless heritage. Making the most of niche markets, whilst cultivating a thorough know-how of crafts to guarantee an irreproachable quality of work, a firm such as J.B. PASTOR & FILS can stand out above its competitors.

An atypical firm

The continuation of the family history, dear to both brothers, is undoubtedly due mainly to the fact that the PASTOR GROUP has always operated in an atypical manner. Thanks to the principles of their development activities, the brothers enjoy the privilege of being able to work completely independently and programme their investments without constraints.
It is also atypical because it is the only surviving representative of the great dynasties of entrepreneurs in the region of Nice and Menton, which have now all disappeared. Loyal to their reputation as “builders”, Jean-Victor and Patrice PASTOR also use their construction activity to develop niche markets.
Far from resting on its laurels, the PASTOR GROUP continues its development and construction activities, searching for technical solutions that care for the environment and enhancing the traditional know-how of noble crafts.
